Thomas Hardy portrait (2017)
A3 in size - Inks, pencils, chalk and coloured card.
I finished this commission piece in December 2017. The piece needed to incorporate three elements - one, be a portrait of a younger, bearded Hardy - two, contain bits of text from Hardy's novel, 'The Mayor Of Casterbridge' - three, feature a nod to Egdon Heath (a fictitious area of Thomas Hardy's Wessex). The first was easy and I found a source photo of a young-ish Hardy (there's not many) that I was happy with pretty quickly. For the second element I bought a second hand copy of the novel and essentially hacked up key parts of the book before arranging and pasting them all down. Finally, for the third element I found a photo of Studland Heath, which is located fairly near to the areas Hardy grew up and is known for being visually very similar to the heath he describes in a number of his novels. I think my style fits well with literary icons like Hardy and I'm sure I'll be creating a few more portraits from the literary world over the coming months.
