I'm a big fan of the first three Alien films and the first one in particular holds an important place in my memory. It was one of those films in my early teens that kids would brag about watching, and then one night, aged about 12, I stayed up late and watched it on ITV when no one else was around. I can remember chatting to friends about it the next day (some had seen it, some hadn't) and how it swam around in my mind for days afterwards. Ever since I started expanding the portraits I've been doing and exploring film and tv icons more I've been planning on doing a Sigourney / Alien piece. I kept it fairly simple and used one of the original promo photos as source material. I wanted something akin to the kind of photo an office worked would have on his desk or wall, a classic posed piece - so the source photo was perfect. It goes against the fraught action and fear within the film nicely I think. The hair is the first thing I get asked about when people see the portrait and it's a cut from a big A2 sheet of woven recycled paper I picked up in Manchester. I love it's look and feel so much I've used it in another piece too (that I'll be unveiling next month).
