The first time I heard Jefferson Airplane's 'Somebody To Love' at a teenage house party I got goosebumps. It was one of those visceral music moments that inevitably led me to listen to more of their stuff and disappear down their musical rabbit hole. I wanted to approach this particular portrait of Grace Slick slightly differently and go for something side-on. I found a great source photo that has Grace looking beautifully blissed out and I loved the idea of creating something really bright and vivid with the piece. I bought a hardcopy Alice In Wonderland book to source cuttings from and create her collaged jacket. An Alice reference seemed too good a visual opportunity to avoid. To add to the blissful look on Grace's face, for her hair I used a cutting from an old book about the Universe I have in the 'collage-able books stack' next to my desk. I like to think the finished piece has the effect of something half way between a pop art screenprint and a San Francisco inspired gig poster. A3 prints of the portrait are also available in a white 20 x 16" mount and/or framed in a 20 x 16" black frame.
