A lot of people say Mark E Smith and The Fall are Marmite-y. If that's the case I'm one of the exceptions to the rule. I find them a bit more like olives. I really enjoy them but I don't want them every day or even every week and I never really want loads of them when I do partake. Anyway, I have a terrible memory but I think this was either the first or second portrait I did as part of my Manchester Icons series. At this stage I didn't dream I'd end up doing fifteen, but this is still one of my favourites as I think it caricatures his dour Mancunian fizzog but adds a cheeky glint at the same time. I think this was the first A3 portrait where I experimented with collaged hair properly and alongside the brick-patterned wrapping paper I think it gives it an urbanite edge without being too ham fisted. I got some sweet messages on Fall fan websites when it got shared too, which was nice.
