I finished this portrait of the great Canadian singer songwriter, Leonard Cohen just a few months before he passed away. His early albums made a big impression on me during my student days and from the articles I've read about him he lived a fascinating life. He stuffed a lot into his 82 years on this planet. He started his career as a poet and novelist in the late 50's and early 60's, released his first album in 1967, wrote one of the most performed songs in American musical history (Hallelujah), toured the world numerous times, co-wrote a rock musical (Night Magic), spent five years as a Zen Buddhist monk and was made a Companion of the Order of Canada (his nation's highest civilian honor) in 2011. I wanted to illustrate Leonard in his classic early to mid seventies phase, all turtle-necked up, staring out with those big, hypnotic eyes. This illustration has proved a popular print since his passing, leading one 'friend' of mine to label me a 'death merchant'! All feedback gratefully received, pfft!
