I remember listening to lots of Bob Dylan in my mid-teens and there was a brief flirtation with other folk artists of the mid 60's that stemmed from that. One of the artists I loved was Donovan. The first album I got was a cheap compilation on vinyl and it had Catch The Wind, Tangerine Puppet, Colours, The Little Tin Soldier, Universal Soldier, Candy Man and (my favourite)Turquoise, on. I've very little interest in the grief he got for being a Dylan impersonator, I just instantly loved his gentle, hippy ballads and found them a great gateway into lots of other lovely psychedelic stuff. When it came to doing a portrait of him I wanted something a bit angular and striking. There's a soft psychedelic swirl in his marbled, jacket and some textured card I bought hoping to use it as collaged hair (hope works people!). It's one of my mum's favourites and at the exhibition opening she told me she got to see Donovan perform on Ready Steady Go in 1965. It was his debut TV performance and she got the bus straight after school to sneak there with her friends. A3 prints of the portrait are also available in a white 20 x 16" mount and framed in 20 x 16" black frame.
